Surgical Abortion  f

Up to 12th week of pregnancy

The course of surgical abortion needs some appointments by your physician.


1st Appointment
Gynecological examination: Before an abortion is performed, it is important to establish that the woman is indeed pregnant and measure as accurately as possible how far along her pregnancy is.
A surgical abortion is possible than within 14 weeks after start of the last menstrual period (abbreviated as LMP).

2nd Appointment
After some days last counseling: You need also an acknowledgment of detailed counseling. Your physician give you information's about contraceptives after the abortion. A coil can be inserted during the surgical abortion, the pill are taken in the evening of the day of abortion or next morning.

3th Appointment

Day of operation. At first a general anesthetic that puts you to sleep briefly will be used. Occasionally, a local anesthetic is used to numb the cervix. After the cervix is dilated slightly and a mild suction empties the contents of the uterus.


4th Appointment

Some days (10 - 15) later, you return again for an examination to confirm that the abortion was complete. The IUD (coil) must be checked with ultrasound if inserted. 

Treatment works about 
99 % of the time.


Safety: 1 death in 200,000 vacuum aspiration abortions.
